چکیده

The nanostructure of amorphous carbon thin films is described in terms of a disordered nanometer sized conductive sp 2 phase embedded in an electrically insulating sp 3 matrix. It is shown that the degree of clustering and disorder within the sp 2 phase plays a determining role in the electronic properties of these films. Clustering of the sp 2 phase is shown to be important in explaining several experimental results including the reduction of the electron spin resonance linewidth with increasing spin density and the dispersion associated with the width of the Raman active G band. The influence of structural disorder, associated with sp 2 clusters of similar size, and topological disorder due to undistorted clusters of the different sizes, on both spin density and Raman measurements is discussed. An extension of this description to intercluster interactions to explain some of the electrical transport and electron field emission behaviour is also presented. a) Electronic mail: [email protected] Phys. Physical Properties of Reactively Sputter-Deposited C-N Thin Films

This work aims to prepare and study amorphous carbon nitride (CNx) films. Films were deposited by reactive magnetron radiofrequency (RF) sputtering from graphite target in argon and nitrogen mixture discharge at room temperature. The ratio of the gas flow rate was varied from 0.1 to 1. Deposited films were found to be amorphous. Highest Nitrogen concentration achieved was 42 atomic percent whic...

Quantifying clustering in disordered carbon thin films

The quantification of disorder and the effects of clustering in the sp phase of amorphous carbon thin films are discussed. The sp phase is described in terms of disordered nanometer-sized conductive sp clusters embedded in a less conductive sp matrix. Quantification of the clustering of the sp phase is estimated from optical as well as from electron and nuclear magnetic resonance methods. Unlik...

A shear localization mechanism for lubricity of amorphous carbon materials

Amorphous carbon is one of the most lubricious materials known, but the mechanism is not well understood. It is counterintuitive that such a strong covalent solid could exhibit exceptional lubricity. A prevailing view is that lubricity of amorphous carbon results from chemical passivation of dangling bonds on surfaces. Here we show instead that lubricity arises from shear induced strain localiz...

Effects of Nanoscale Clustering in Amorphous Carbon

In this review the effects of clustering associated with the sp and sp phases of amorphous carbon thin films are examined. We highlight that many of the optical and electronic properties of these films can be explained by consideration of disorder in the sp phase. Within the context of topological and structural disorder, we explain the variation of the visible Raman line width, Raman shift, Ta...

Effects of Structure and Partially Localization of the π Electron Clouds of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes on the Cation-π Interactions

A C102H30 graphene sheet has been rolled up to construct Single-Walled Carbon NanoTube Fragments (SWCNTFs) as parts of armchair carbon nanotubes by computational quantum chemistry methods. Non-covalent cation-π interactions of the Na+ cation on the central rings of SWCNTFs have investigated. The binding energies of the Na+-SWCNTF complexes versus ...
